GRE - Graduate Record Examinations


What is GRE?
  • The full form of GRE is Graduate Record Examinations. It is a standardised test conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Services) for the students who are applying to postgraduate courses in the US and in some other parts of the world.

  • ETS GRE scores are accepted by most of the top graduate level schools for Masters level programs (like the popular Master of Science degree – MS in USA).

  • There are actually two GRE examinations: General Test and Subject Tests.

  • The exam aims of this exam is to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not entirely based on any specific field of study outside of the GRE itself.

  • The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-based exam administered at respective centers.

  • The computer-based GRE can be taken once every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous period of 12 months. This includes test attempts in which the score was cancelled by the candidate.
Eligibility
  • There are no specific eligibility criteria for GRE 2017 Test. Hence, the candidate sitting for GRE test 2017 do not have to fulfill any necessary GRE Eligibility Criteria. Candidate can register for the test irrespective of age and qualification. However, the candidate has to fulfill the GRE eligibility criteria for individual institutes where he/she is applying. Since, GRE is a postgraduate test, generally, students who have cleared their undergraduation opt for the examination for entry into Masters or Phd courses abroad, especially, USA. Once the candidate fullfils the GRE eligibility criteria of the institute he/she can register for the GRE test is free to choose any available GRE Test Dates.

  • *Unscored: This section will not be declared explicitly and can appear in any order after Analytical Writing section. Questions in this section are being tried out either for possible use in future tests or to ensure that scores on new editions of the test are comparable to scores from earlier editions.
  • **Research: This section will be declared explicitly and, if included, will appear at the end of the test instead of the Unscored section. Questions in this section are included for ETS research purposes.
  • Performance in Unscored or Research sections will not affect the score.
  • The total duration of the test will be about 3 hours 45 minutes.
  • The Analytical Writing section is always presented first. Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Unscored sections can appear in any order. Each section should be approached with the thought that it will count towards the score.
How to Apply for the GRE
  1. Online Registration
    • Create a My GRE Account on the GRE website.
    • Log in to your My GRE Account and click ‘Register for the General Test’. You can see the available dates and centres and select them.
    • Pay fees online using an American Express, MasterCard or a Visa credit card.
    • The reporting time and the test center address will be mailed to you.
  2. Phone Registration
    • Call the Regional Registration Centre (RRC) of Prometric India on 0124- 4147700 at least 3 business days before your preferred test date.
    • Pay US fees by using an American Express, MasterCard or a Visa credit card. You have to share your credit card details over the phone.
    • A confirmation number, reporting time and the test center address will be given to you.
  3. Mail Registration
    • Download the International Test Scheduling Form. Fill in all the details correctly.
    • Prepare a dollar Demand Draft (DD) of fees in favour of ETS-GRE from any nationalized bank.
    • Mail the International Test Scheduling Form, Demand Draft and a photocopy of your passport to: Prometric 2nd floor, DLF Infinity Tower–A Sector 25, Phase II DLF City Gurgaon Haryana 122002 India.
    • You will be assigned a test date, time and location based on the information you provide on the form. If your requested date(s) cannot be accommodated, you will be scheduled for the next available test date. A confirmation number, reporting time and the test center address will be emailed, faxed or mailed to you.

Documents Required on Test Day

Following documents are required for identification purposes, when taking the test in India:

  1. Primary ID:
    • Valid passport with your name, photograph and signature.
  2. Supplemental ID:
    • Driving license
    • PAN card

The supplemental ID documents might be needed only if the test administrator is not convinced with the details of the Primary ID.
