GTU Examination Evaluation System

GTU Examination - Passing Criteria

External Examination (GTU) Mid-Sem Examination (Institute) Practical Examination (Institute)
Total Marks 70 30 50
Minimum Marks required to pass 23 12 25
  • For GTU External Examination, most subjects will have 5 Questions of 14 marks each, totaling to 70 marks. Paper duration will be 2hrs 30minutes.

How to calculate SPI / CPI
  1. The evaluation pattern will consist of a 70 marks of External Examination conducted by Gujarat Technological University and 30 marks of Mid-Sem Examination conducted by college/institute.

  2. After adding the External Examination Marks and Mid-Sem Examination Marks, the marks will be converted to a letter grade as per following:
Mark Range Grade SPI Credits
85 to 100 AA 10
75 to 84 AB 09
65 to 74 BB 08
55 to 64 BC 07
45 to 54 CC 06
40 to 44 CD 05
35 to 39 DD 04
Less than 35 FF 00
  • Calculation of SPI (SEMESTER PERFORMANCE INDEX)
    SPI = ∑CiGi / ∑Ci

  • Example:- suppose a student in a semester has achieved following result:
Subject Credit of Subject (Ci) Grade Achieved by Student Grade Point for the Grade Achieved (Gi) Ci * Gi
Subject - A 5 AA 10 50
Subject - B 5 AB 9 45
Subject - C 5 BC 7 35
Subject - D 6 BC 7 42
Subject - E 6 CC 6 36
Subject - F 3 DD 4 12
∑Ci 30 ∑CiGi 220
  • SPI = ΣCiGi / ΣCi = 220/30 = 7.33
  • Similarly CPI (cumulative performance index) will be calculated by same formulae, but for the sum of being over all the courses taken in current and preceding semester. However, in calculating CPI, any fail grade which the student might have earned but has subsequently passed will be replaced by passing grade in the subject. The SPI of the corresponding semester will however continue to reflect such failures and will not be recalculated.
  • Class and Distinction etc. will be awarded for the degree on the bases of CPI.
CPI / CGPA Equivalent Class

CPI / CGPA Equivalent Class shall be as follows:

CPI / CGPA Range Class
7.1 & above First Class with Distinction
6.5 to 7 First Class
5.5 to 6.5 Second Class
Below 5.5 Pass Class
